Bravo pH Esophageal Monitoring

Esophageal pH monitoring is a test that is designed to measure how often and for how long stomach acid enters the esophagus. Bravo pH probe testing is most commonly used to determine whether or not a patient has gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, it can also be used to determine the overall effectiveness of medications or surgery to treat GERD.

How it works

The test involves a miniature pH capsule, which is approximately the size of a gel cap. The capsule is temporarily attached to the wall of your esophagus. A local anesthesia is administered, then the capsule is placed into your esophagus using a delivery device. The capsule will continually measure the pH in your esophagus. It will transmit this information to the recorder, which is worn on your belt. After the capsule has been placed, you will be instructed how to use the recorder. Then, you will be able to resume your normal activities. Once the test has been completed, you will need to return the recorder according to your physician office instructions. Then, your test data can be downloaded for analysis. Dr Asim will analyze the information in order to diagnose your condition.
